Manual vs automatic upload
Two ways to get footage into the platform: upload it yourself — from an SD card or your computer — or let the camera upload on its own. Each has its place.
The Untamed Data Platform accepts both, so you are not forced to choose one for a whole program — you can mix them across a grid.
Automatic upload (FTPS)
Cameras with an internet connection — over WiFi to a router, or a SIM — push each capture to the server over FTPS, so detections appear in your dashboard within minutes — no field trip needed. That is the strength: you see a camera go quiet, or a priority species show up, without waiting weeks. The cost is battery, and mobile data on a cellular camera; either way the camera needs a way onto the internet on site.
Manual upload
Manual upload is the fallback when there is no connection at all, or when you want the full-resolution originals without cellular limits. You send the footage in yourself — cards you collect on your rounds, or files already on your computer. The downside is latency — you only learn what happened on your last visit — and the field time to walk the grid.
Getting the files off the camera works a few common ways:
- SD card into a reader — pull the card and read it on your computer with a card reader, then drag the photos in.
- Camera over USB — plug the camera into your computer; its SD card shows up as an ordinary folder you upload from.
- The camera's own app — for a cellular camera not set up for FTP, download the images through the manufacturer's app first, then upload them to Untamed Data. You're not stuck inside that app. For full resolution, the SD card is the surest source; an app sometimes hands you a smaller copy.
A common mix
Many programs run automatic upload on priority or hard-to-reach cameras, and SD cards on the rest, or use SD as a backup on every camera in case a upload fails. See how camera upload works for the automatic path.
