Lens quality and the AI
The camera is the sensor, and the AI can only work with what the lens delivers. Budget cameras often save money on the optics, and a soft, low-detail image is harder for any AI to read.
The Untamed Data Platform is camera-agnostic — it works with most cameras that can upload. But camera-agnostic does not mean every camera gives you the same result. A blurry, noisy, or washed-out frame gives the AI less to work with: more empty triggers slip through, and more identifications land in the review queue for a person to confirm.
Why the lens matters for detection
Detection and species classification read pixels. A sharp, well-exposed frame of an animal is easy to label; a soft, grainy, or over-exposed one is not — especially when the animal is far from the camera or lit only by infrared at night. Poor optics shrink the effective range at which one species can reliably be told from another. The animal is in the frame either way; whether the AI (or a person) can say which animal depends on how much detail the lens captured.
Where cheap cameras cut corners
The savings on a very cheap camera usually come out of the optics and sensor: small plastic lenses that focus softly and fringe colour, weak low-light performance that turns into heavy noise at night, and a narrow dynamic range that blows out highlights and crushes shadows. Each is minor on its own; together they cost you clean identifications — the exact frames a monitoring programme needs.
What to look for
You do not need the most expensive camera. You do want glass (not plastic) optics where you can get them, decent low-light and IR performance, and a lens matched to the distance you actually shoot at. The cheapest camera often is not a bargain once the AI — and your reviewers — spend their time on marginal images.
Camera-agnostic, and honest about it. The platform works with most cameras, and the review queue plus confidence scores keep results trustworthy even when a frame is marginal — but better optics simply mean fewer uncertain IDs to clear. See supported cameras.
