Avoiding camera lock-in
Many cameras tie your footage to one maker's app and cloud. Untamed Data is the open layer above the hardware.
Buy a trail camera and it's easy to end up buying its whole ecosystem with it. Many cameras — cellular ones especially — are built to talk to one place: the manufacturer's app, feeding the manufacturer's cloud, storing your footage in the manufacturer's format. It works fine right up to the day you want to change something. Then you find out how much of your data, and your history, was never really in your hands.
That's lock-in. It's rarely one thing — it's usually three at once.
The three locks
- The camera only talks to their system. Setup runs through the maker's app, and footage uploads only to the maker's cloud. A camera from another brand can't join, and yours can't easily go elsewhere.
- Your data lives in their format. Photos, detections, and the history around them sit inside their platform. Export, where it exists, is partial or shaped so only their tools read it cleanly.
- Your account hangs on the brand. Add cameras, add years of captures, and the whole record depends on one vendor's service staying available, affordable, and around.
None of this shows on day one. It surfaces the day you want to add a different camera, hand a project to a colleague, publish to a public database, or simply leave.
Where Untamed Data is open
We built the platform as the open layer above the hardware, not another walled garden. That shows up in concrete places:

Buy the camera you want
The point isn't that any one brand is bad. It's that the camera and the data shouldn't be the same decision. Pick the hardware that fits your site and budget; keep the data, the history, and the freedom to move it, on your side. That's what under your control means to us.
